The Power of Awe
When was the last time you felt a sense of awe? Science shows that feelings of awe have a unique neurochemical profile. Journalist Michael Pollan theorizes that awe is associated with innovative thinking and seeing perennial problems in new ways. Awe-inspiring experiences can help us see our work or our team in a whole new light.
Youth are a great example of this phenomenon. Young children experience awe frequently because their world is so new and, well, awesome. Children learn at lightning speed partly thanks to this curious, experimental state of awe. Unfortunately, as we get older we get used to the world and our sense of awe grows numb.
Luckily for us, scenes of wilderness grandeur still hold a key that unlocks our ability to be amazed. Think back to the last time you watched the sunset or gazed at a waterfall. These scenes quiet our minds and create space for the type of meditative awareness that we need to solve our perennial conundrums. “Why doesn’t my team get along?” “How must our product adapt?” “How can we connect with this elusive user group?”
A Climbing for Kids trip is an opportunity for you and your team members to challenge yourselves on a wilderness excursion, restore your sense of awe, and support Bay Area Wilderness Training. What is BAWT’s mission? In a nutshell, we strive to get Bay Area youth into wilderness. Learn more at our website: www.bawt.org
